About Carnwath Golf Club
Carnwath Golf Club offers a mature golf course which was founded in 1907. The course is situated on a piece of land called ‘Gallow Hill’, to the west of the village of Carnwath. The then ‘9 hole course’ was laid out by Mr Willie Auchterlonie, an Open champion. The course was finally extended to 18 holes in May 1922. The club crest bears a silhouette of Carnwath Motte, a natural mound with a man-made defensive ditch surrounding, on which a lookout tower stood in the 12th century. The ‘Roundel’, which shares its name with the courses opening hole, is still a visible feature of the course, located directly behind the first green.

CarnwathVandaag onder typische “Schotse weersomstandigheden“ deze baan gespeeld. £40 voor 18 holes +£20 per buggie. Vriendelijke ontvangst en uitleg in de golfshop. Het was niet druk dus we mochten starten wanneer we wilden. Hole 1 is een lange par3 die omhoog loopt. Zo zijn er nog een paar. Veel hoogteverschil en dat maakt het erg leuk. Na 3 holes moet je een drukke autoweg oversteken, erg opletten hier! Na hole 15 hetzelfde verhaal! De holes liggen er prachtig bij met, zoals gezegd, veel hoogteverschil. Fairways, teeboxen, bunkers en greens zijn erg goed onderhouden. Wel veel los gras op de pas gemaaide fairways. En de semi rough is verraderlijk, net iets hoger dan de bal dus vaak is hij nauwelijks nog te zien en dat is wat irritant. Wat ook erg oppassen is zijn de verschillende fairways die elkaar kruisen. Als onbekende spelers was dit vaak oppassen geblazen. Ook de verwijzing naar de volgende holes kan beter, soms staat er wel een bordje, maar is soms het erg zoeken naar de volgende (rode) tee, vooral op hole 8. Greens zijn erg fraai, mooi geonduleerd en vrij snel. Terug in het clubhuis een lekker biertje gedronken en gekletst met de gezellige barman. Al met al een leuke ervaring en zeker de moeite waard!

18 holesAlthough the course is less than 6,000 yards in length, three of its four par threes are in the first four holes, so it is important to be swinging well and straight from the start. As your round progresses, several roads and a railway line come into play, putting a premium on accuracy as opposed to length. Carnwath boasts a tough finish, ensuring that a good score is never given up lightly. The initial 9-hole course was designed by Mr Willie Auchterlonie. In1922 the course was extended to 18 holes in May 1922. The layout was again redesigned by G.M Clark, then club champion. The new layout opened in July 1963 and with minor modern reworks, it remains a stern test of accuracy for golfers of all abilities to this day.
