About Seaton Carew Golf Club

People have been playing golf at Seaton Carew Golf Club since 1874, making it the tenth-oldest golf club in England. The club is based in Seaton Carew, near Hartlepool on the North Sea coast. When it was first established it was the only golf club in the English counties of Yorkshire and Durham, hence its original name Durham & Yorkshire Golf Club. Originally the course was laid out by Dr. McCuaig with 14 holes, 4 extra holes were added later by the Club Professional James Kay and opened on 3 August 1891. By the mid-1920s the shoreline had retreated Eastward, providing a new area of dunes. With the help of Dr. Alister MacKenzie the course was revamped extensively. That course is now known as the Old Course. There are 22 holes in total which can be configured as three different courses.

Four years ago, after playing a mixed open with Mrs. W, I wrote that Seaton Carew had "very high aspirations for the future." "With its 150th anniversary on the horizon, it appointed Royal St. George's deputy greenkeeper, Tom Coulson, with the aim of recreating aspects of the Mackenzie-designed course to their original state." The festivities are over, and many changes have occurred on the course—with more exciting ones being proposed. Seaton Carew is a traditional members' club and prides itself on being the centre of its community. Its clubhouse was buzzing on the Sunday we visited. It is the 10th-oldest golf club in England, dating back to 1873. Its original 14 holes were extended to 18, and 33 years later, Dr. Alister Mackenzie redesigned the course nearer the dunes. In the 1970s, Frank Pennink added four more holes, creating an unusual scenario in which a day's round could consist of five different possibilities of 18 from 22. However, the complexities of that setup are now being reviewed. The club may revert to 18 holes, mixing new layouts with traditional ones. Seaton Carew has an industrial backdrop on one side but a better vista of dramatic dunes on the seaside, thanks to the removal of overgrown sea buckthorn thickets. There has also been considerable work on restoring bunkers to a more rustic appearance. For example, the especially testing pot bunkers around the third hole have been replaced. The improved par-three third is one of the most memorable holes. It requires precision club selection and hitting to find a table-top green. The 17th also challenges to be the best hole on the course. This par-four bends to the right with plenty of rough ready to gobble drives that go too long. Its stand-out element is a wildly undulating green that is surrounded by bunkers. It is a fiendishly complex putting surface. The abiding memory of the 18th hole is how close the target is to the practice putting surface just beyond it, and the clubhouse to the rear. I can imagine many a good score being wrecked by the ball rolling onto one or the other. Thankfully, ours found neither, and we darted away from the first spots of a shower, content that we had enjoyed a course on the up and one that deserves regular visits.

Played the Micklam course on a reasonably calm day , which is probably uncommon!. The course is a delight to play , challenging shots , superb greens and well maintained fiendish bunkers. Everything at Seaton Carew is high quality as might be expected for one of the top 100 UK courses

Gracias!

Micklem Course

The Micklem layout has three Pennink holes making it slightly shorter in length than the more demanding Brabazon Course, however, this is still a great test of golf. This course was used for the English Boys Amateur Strokeplay Championship, the Carris Trophy.

Old Course

The history of the Old Course started in 1874 when Dr. McCuaig designed 14 holes. In 1891 another 4 holes were added by the Club Professional James Kay. The current 18 holes of the Old Course were redesigned in 1925 by renowned golf architect, Dr Alister Mackenzie, and they provide a great challenge for golfers of all standards.

Brabazon Course

The Brabazon Course mainly consist of holes of the Old Course, with an additional four holes which were added in the mid-1970s by Frank Pennink. This forms the Brabazon layout which has been used for the English Open Amateur Strokeplay Championship, the Brabazon Trophy
