The club was already preparing for the upcoming AIG Women’s Open, with grandstands and tournament infrastructure already in place, which made the visit feel even more special. The course was very dry due to the recent hot weather – exactly what you would expect from a traditional links course. Firm fairways, plenty of run, and a true test of strategic golf rather than just distance. Every hole offers its own challenge, and the famous bunkering demands accuracy from tee to green. The welcome at the clubhouse was very friendly. Before the round, I enjoyed a meal with a beautiful view across the course, which was a great way to start the day. One thing to keep in mind is the clubhouse dress code – long trousers are required in certain areas, so it’s worth checking before your visit. The pro shop is relatively compact, but it offers a great selection of merchandise and everything is conveniently located. Adding even more prestige, Royal Lytham & St Annes has been confirmed as the host venue for The 156th Open Championship in 2028, returning to The Open rota for the first time since Ernie Els’ memorable victory in 2012. (The Open⁠) Overall, Royal Lytham & St Annes delivers exactly what golfers hope for when visiting one of England’s legendary Open Championship venues: history, tradition, outstanding course conditioning, and a genuine British atmosphere. A memorable links experience that every passionate golfer should play at least once.

Weltklasse – habe ich oft gelesen und mir fällt keine bessere Beschreibung ein. Ich habe diesen traditionellen Links Platz nach den Umbau Maßnahmen im Juli 2025 spielen dürfen. Der Golfplatz war in einem so guten Zustand, dass ich einen Umbau gar nicht wahrgenommen hätte. Gespielt an einem Abend, während die British Open ca. 200miles weiter westlich in Royal Portrush ausgetragen wurden, waren wir zu Dritt und fast allein auf dem Golfplatz. Auf Grund der Einführung durch ein Mitglied war uns der Abschlag von den Red Tees als Par 71 über 6700 yards erlaubt. Die Eröffnung mit einem vergleichsweise kurzem Par 3 über ca. 195 yards, gut einzusehen und mit ausreichender Landezone auch um das Grün, nahm mir die Nervosität vor einem Pacour, auf dem bis vor 25 Jahren noch die British Open ausgetragen wurden – und der von seinem Anspruch nicht verloren hatte. Ein True Links, der allen Kriterien dazu gerecht wird. Mittlerer weile durch die stetig wachsende Siedlung gänzlich eingerahmt, bieten die Ginster, Hecken und Krüppelgewächse ausreichend Abschirmung und eine ganzjährige grün – natürliche Umfassung. Und ein wenig Schutz vor den rauen Winden der Irischen See. Zum Strand sind es nur 750m. Perfekte Teeboxen, leicht ondulierte, sandige Fairways und pfeilschnelle Grüns, mit zahllosen anspruchsvollen Pin Positionen. Die Natur hat es gut gemeint mit der Lage und der letzte Gletscher hat das richtige Material herangeschoben und gedrückt. Ein ganzjährig bespielbarer Links. Herzstück sind meines Erachtens die Bunker – zahllose kleine Pot Bunker. Nicht übertrieben tief, aber allesamt anspruchsvoll zu räumen. Und oft eng beieinander, so dass der Verbleib zwischen zweien als ein Geschenk des Schicksals anzunehmen ist. Neben der Geschwindigkeit auf dem Grün, kommen die Geländeverwerfungen, Senken und Bunker, hier besonders ins Spiel. Ein gekonnt gefühlvolles, kurzes Spiel ist notwendig. Und doch rollt der Ball gerne an der Flagge vorbei – und in die gegenüberliegende Senke. Die Fairways haben eine Qualität, wie Grüns auf anderen Plätzen. Bälle springen und rollen noch einen weiten Weg. Die einrahmenden Dünen geben ein faires Moment und Chance auf den member´s bounce; den Sprung zurück auf das Fairway. Das trockene Frühjahr 2025 haben das Rough dünn ausfallen lassen. Ich hatte stets gute Chancen, einen verzogenen Ball wieder zu finden. Kleinere Buschgruppen und Krüppelgewächse verschlucken eher mal einen zu weit fliegenden Ball. Deren Anpflanzungen sind aber überschaubar. Höhepunkt des OUT sind sicherlich die zwei hintereinander folgenden Par 5 mit einem weiteren langen Par 4. Neben der Länge kommen auch welligere Fairways ins Spiel. Eines der schönsten Löcher, Grün #9, beendet das OUT – allerdings fern des Clubhauses. Kein normaler Mensch wollte hier aber auch nach 9 Loch aufhören. Das IN ist ca. 200 yards länger, nur ein Par 3 – windgeschützt umringt von Dünen mit Buschgruppen, aber frontal schwer verteidigt. Es wird dem Spieler nichts geschenkt. Sechs Par 4 in Folge erfordern dann noch mal ein sehr präzises Spiel – mit wechselnden Längen zum Ziel. Höhepunkt des Anspruchs war für mich der Abschlag auf der Bahn 17. Die Landezone vor dem Dogleg zur Linken mit einer waste area eingeschränkt und zahllose Bunker, die mir gleich 2 Extra Schläge aufzwangen – aber nie einen Ballverlust. Bahn 18 führt und endet am Clubhaus, hinter welchem zur richtigen Zeit die Sonne untergeht – Golf Romantic meets classic. Ein zeitlos schöner Golfplatz! Ein must play course! In einer der schönsten Umgebungen, die England mit dem Juwel am Strand, Lytham St. Anne´s zu bieten hat. Ich bedaure, durch die späte Heimkehr das ehrwürdige Clubhaus kein zweites mal betreten zu haben - es verdient ein eigenes review.

Royal Lytham & St Annes is tough, historic, relentlessly strategic & utterly compelling. The bunkering is the headline act, every shot feels like navigating a minefield but there’s subtlety too, especially in how the course flows and asks different questions throughout the round. The recent changes? Seamless. You’d need a forensic eye to spot them. Everything feels like it’s always been the way it is now. RL & SA is not a place for postcard views but if you like your golf cerebral, challenging, and grounded in proper championship pedigree, it delivers in spades. One of my absolute favourites.

You could describe Lytham as a "grand old lady". The clubhouse is an early c20th masterpiece, full of timber panelling, memorabilia of over a century of major tournaments and with a lovely balcony looking out over the 18th green. Other than the 8th green and (my favourite hole on the course) par 3 9th, the course is pretty flat. Like Muirfield, everything is laid out in front of you, so it's very fair. Also like Muirfield, it features lots of changes of directions, so you always have to think about the impact of the inevitable breeze.

I was slightly surprised at how lush the greens and green surrounds were - really not very "linksy". That I think can be put down to the exceptionally wet summer weather. I'm not sure the Open will ever return - the site doesn't feel big enough for either the crowds or the infrastructure, despite some changes made recently under the auspices of the ubiquitous McKenzie and Ebert. (I'm not a fan of their work - great if all you want is severe run offs!)

Overall, Lytham is a great day out. Not as severe or memorable as many of the other Open rota courses - but still up there as a great golfing experience.

I’d been looking forward to it for a long time. Known for hosting Open Championships and some of golf’s most iconic moments, this Lancashire great truly lived up to its reputation. The round began on a high, with the opening par 3 immediately setting the tone for what was to come. The course demands accuracy from the start, with tight fairways and an intimidating number of perfectly placed bunkers (174, to be exact) ready to punish even slightly wayward shots. There’s no escaping the fact that every shot needs to be carefully considered. The stretch of holes from 7 to 9 was a particular highlight for me, with the greens running true and fast, while the bunkers sometimes acted like magnets for my ball. The back nine, however, is where Royal Lytham truly bares its teeth, especially from 16 onwards. The closing par-4 18th, framed by deep bunkers, is as tough as it is iconic and makes for a dramatic finish to the round. Unfortunately, the weather took a turn midway through, with wind and rain sweeping in off the Irish Sea, which made things a lot trickier. It certainly tested my patience and short game and gave me a greater appreciation for how this course became a true Open test under difficult conditions. Still, I couldn’t help but feel that the weather robbed me of the full experience I know this place has to offer. Despite the conditions, Royal Lytham left a lasting impression. The course’s character, its fast-running fairways, and its rich history are something every golfer should experience. The clubhouse, with its walls lined with memorabilia, is a fantastic place to reflect on your round ideally over a drink, which I certainly needed! I’m already looking forward to a return visit, hopefully with the weather on my side, to take on this magnificent course once again and see it in its best light.
