A Golf Getaway in Cologne (Köln)

Every year since 2004, my friends and I have gone on a golf trip to a different city or region. That’s actually how the idea for Leading Courses first came about. This year, it was tough to get everyone’s schedules to line up, so we decided to drive instead of flying. After exploring the interactive region maps on Leadingcourses.com, Cologne stood out.

Here’s why:

• Accessible within 2 to 3 hours by car from the Netherlands
• Excellent selection of golf courses
• Great food, beer, and culture for off-course enjoyment

And what also truly surprised us, though, was Cologne itself. With its relaxed terraces along the Rhine, the awe-inspiring Dom towering over the skyline, and charming squares filled with lively pubs, the city offered the perfect balance of culture, history, and nightlife. It turned out to be much more than just a base for golf, it became a highlight in its own right.

Located just east of the city in Refrath, Golf und Land Club Köln is one of Germany's oldest and most storied clubs. Founded in 1906, the club radiates tradition from the moment you arrive. The layout, designed by Bernhard von Limburger, winds through tall trees and features small, well-guarded greens and striking white quartz bunkers that visually pop against the fairways.Despite its old-world charm, the course is anything but outdated. The routing remains strategic and satisfying for modern golfers, especially those who value accuracy over distance.

Facilities include a well-equipped grass tee driving range and a large putting green in front of the terrace, complete with an old tree growing right through it. Note: the course is open to visitors only on weekdays, and a handicap of 28 or lower (36 for women) is required.The best time to visit is in late spring, when the rhododendrons lining the fairways are in full bloom, an added splash of color to an already picturesque round.

• Historic prestige and charm: Founded in 1906, the golf club combines a traditional feel with subtle modern touches, creating a refined and welcoming atmosphere.
• Well-designed and rewarding course: The layout by Bernhard von Limburger features clever doglegs, a little stream meandering the course, and small, well-defended greens that demand accurate play.
• Striking white quartz bunkers: These bright bunkers don’t just look good, they also offer consistent playability and contrast beautifully with the well maintained fairways.
• Excellent practice facilities: Highlights include a long, grass-tee driving range and a large putting green set right in front of the terrace, with an old tree in the middle.

To the west of Cologne lies Kölner Golfclub, a large and relatively new facility with 45 holes and strong practice infrastructure. While it doesn’t have the same pedigree as Refrath, it offers more variety, making it ideal for groups with different skill levels or for golfers who want to play multiple formats in one weekend.

We tackled the Championship Course, which offered a fair but challenging round. With several water hazards, elevation changes, and tricky greens, it’s an enjoyable layout although some of the long transitions between holes disrupt the pace a bit. The terrace and clubhouse felt a little less welcoming than the other courses, but the value for money was hard to beat. At €85 for a weekend round, it’s a solid option, especially since visitor tee times are available on Saturdays and Sundays.

What stood out most here was the flexibility. Whether you want to warm up with a quick 9-hole round, test your mettle on a links-style course, or grind through 18 championship holes, the setup caters to all preferences.

• Lots of variety: 45 holes in total, including an 18-hole Championship Course, a Links Course, and a 9-hole Short Course for beginners or quick rounds.
• Top practice facilities: A long grass-tee driving range (with heaters), short game area, and generous putting green.
• Challenging design: Water hazards, tricky greens, and risk-reward holes make the Championship Course enjoyable for experienced players.
• Visitor-friendly on weekends: Unlike some member-only clubs, tee times are available for non-members on Saturdays and Sundays.
• Convenient location: Easy to reach via the A1 motorway, with plenty of parking on-site.

Just outside Cologne in Pulheim, Gut Lärchenhof delivers a very different experience: polished, exclusive, and unforgettable. As Germany’s only Jack Nicklaus Signature Design, the course has hosted numerous European Tour events and is built to the highest international standards.

The fairways are wide and inviting off the tee, but the real challenge starts around the greens. Strategic bunkering and elevation shifts demand a thoughtful approach. The practice facilities wouldn’t feel out of place at a major championship, complete with pyramid stacks of premium balls and flawless turf conditions.

But what truly elevates Gut Lärchenhof is the service. From named tee markers on the range to small welcome gifts, everything feels intentional. The locker rooms are exceptional, and the Michelin-starred restaurant is worth sticking around for, even if you’re not hungry. It's worth noting that weekend access for green fee players is limited, so plan ahead.

• Prestigious Jack Nicklaus Design: The only course of its kind in Germany, offering broad fairways, tiered greens, and a classic American layout.
• Top-tier service: From early gate access to personalised touches like named spots on the range and a little golden bear as a present, everything feels five-star.
• Tournament-quality practice area: Hit off grass with pyramids of premium balls, only found at top clubs.
• Playable yet challenging: Forgiving off the tee but demanding around the greens; the height of the rough can significantly change the level of difficulty.
• Exceptional hospitality: Warm welcome, amazing locker rooms with eye for detail, and a memorable post-round meal at the on-site Michelin-starred restaurant.

Looking back, our golf trip to Cologne ticked all the right boxes. We set out to play a few top-quality courses, but ended up experiencing so much more. Each club brought its own unique character: the rich history and elegance of Golf und Land Club Köln, the scale and variety of Kölner Golfclub, and the world-class polish of Gut Lärchenhof. Together, they gave us a perfect mix of tradition, challenge, and modern comfort. If you have time or feel like playing 36 holes in one day, you could add Marienburger Golf-Club to your itinerary. 

What really made this trip stand out, though, was the combination of great golf with everything Cologne itself has to offer. It’s a city full of surprises, friendly, vibrant, and easy to explore after a day on the course. Whether you’re sipping Kölsch by the Rhine or teeing it up at one of the region’s best clubs, Cologne proves that you don’t have to fly far to enjoy an unforgettable golf break.
