Newport Sands Links Golf Club

Een echte links baan, gelegen aan de prachtige kust, vlakbij het plaatsje Newport. De eerste (hoger gelegen) negen holes liggen er beter bij dan de tweede. Redelijke t-boxen en fairways. De greens zijn overal OK, maar over het algemeen weinig uitdagend. De holes zijn overwegend recht, met af en toe een beetje dogleg. Hole 9 is een spannende uitzondering. Bunkers liggen niet echt in de weg en er is geen water in de baan. Kortom: een beetje saai. De tweede negen zijn lager gelegen, op zandgrond die het water niet vasthoudt. Er is geen bewatering op de fairways, dus die zijn zelfs in het natte Wales behoorlijk droog, met de nodige kale plekken. Grootste uitdaging zit eigenlijk in de schuin aflopende fairways.

Easy to access Golf course, helpful staff to get you started. Playing golf with the backdrop of the Sea is magnificent. I liked the first 9 because of the views, and hole 8/9 for the design. Greens were fair and faster than expected, fairways a bit dry and hard, hence choice of club essential. The second nine has various crossings with the public footpath and road. We played the course with 3 Beaufort, but I can imagine it gets a lot and a lot harder when playing with windy conditions! Don’t miss it when you are in the neighbourhood.

In the hot summer of 2025, the fairways were mostly in poor condition. However, the greens were perfect. The course has two faces. The first half is played above the clubhouse on a hill. Here, the view from the 8th green down to the long beach dominates. Great. The ninth hole is bizarre, played downhill onto a smaller green. The second nine is below the clubhouse. Here, two par 3s (15 and 16) and the 17th hole with a green overlooking the beach are particularly interesting. The club is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year.

Wat een leuke baan. De drivingrange was zeker verrassend. Hele mooie holes. Je houdt toch nog zicht op de flight voor je. De 2e 9 is echt links, ligging direct aan het strand.

Een prachtige linkscourse vooral de tweede oude 9 is schitterend gelegen aan de kust met fraaie uitzichten over de kustlijn met haven en cliffs. P voor het clubhuis en een zeer vriendelijk ontvangst door de aanwezige caddymaster die ons begeleide waar te starten en hoe hole 9 en 10 te spelen echt top kregen zelfs een kaartje mee. En dat hielp inderdaad een goede score te maken. Het onderhoud is meer dan ok en de greens soms verrassend snel maar eerlijk. Na afloop wat gegeten in het clubhuis en dat was prima met fantastisch uitzicht over de baai en kust. Een aanrader voor alle linkscourse liefhebbers.
